Travelling with Dogs: Expert Tips for a Smooth and Safe Journey

Travelling with Dogs

Planning to take your dog abroad? With the right preparation, international travel with your pet can be a safe and enjoyable experience for both of you. This guide outlines the key steps to ensure your dog is ready for the journey and remains healthy and comfortable while you’re away.

Animal Health Certificate (AHC): What You Need to Know

Since the UK’s departure from the European Union, UK-issued pet passports are no longer valid for travel to EU countries. Instead, you will need to obtain an Animal Health Certificate (AHC) for your dog.

An AHC must be issued by an official veterinarian within 10 days prior to travel. To qualify, your dog must be:

  • Microchipped
  • Vaccinated against rabies, with the vaccination administered at least 21 days before travel

The AHC is valid for:

  • A single entry into the EU
  • Ongoing travel within the EU
  • Return to the UK

All of this must occur within a four-month period from the date of issue.

Important: Entry requirements may vary between countries. For example, destinations such as Finland and Malta may require proof of tapeworm treatment. Always check the specific regulations for your destination before travelling.

For detailed information on obtaining an AHC, please refer to the official UK government guidance: Getting an animal health certificate.

Health and Safety Abroad

Be Aware of Regional Health Risks

Travelling in Europe can expose your dog to health threats not commonly found in the UK. In warmer climates, parasites such as ticks, sandflies, and mosquitoes (some of which carry heartworm) can pose serious risks. These insects can transmit diseases including leishmaniasis and ehrlichiosis.

Before your trip, consult your vet about preventive treatments or vaccinations that may be recommended for your destination.

Practical Travel Tips

To ensure your dog remains comfortable and stress-free during your travels, consider the following:

  • Pack Essentials: Ensure you have a plentiful supply of fresh water for any journey. Bring an ample supply of your dog’s regular food, and where possible, familiar items such as their bed, blanket, or favourite toy.
  • Maintain Routine: Try to keep your dog’s routine consistent. Stick to regular times for walks, meals, and sleep whenever possible.
  • Check Accommodation: Confirm that any accommodation you book is dog-friendly, and verify pet policies for trains, ferries, or other forms of transport.
  • Travel by Car: If you’re driving, plan for regular breaks to allow your dog to stretch and relieve themselves.

Enjoy the Journey

While travelling with a dog requires some additional planning, it is entirely manageable—and incredibly rewarding. With the right preparation, you and your canine companion can enjoy a safe, relaxing, and memorable adventure together.
