Why Do Dogs…

Why Do Dogs…

… do the quirky things that leave us scratching our heads?

If you’ve ever wondered “Why does my dog eat grass?”, or “Why does my dog sleep so much?”, this article will help you. We’re going to chat through some common dog behaviours and what they mean.

Why do dogs roll in fox poo?

Most unpleasant! However, perfectly natural. Rolling in strong, smelly scents is thought to be an ancient canine instinct. Dogs would do this in the wild to disguise their own scent while hunting. This would allow them to get closer to their prey without detection. In modern times, every meal is served up to our pet’s in a bowl, but this is one habit that evolution hasn’t yet kicked!

Why do dogs wag their tails?

Tail wags aren’t just a way to show joy; they’re also big social cues for other things. A fast, loose wag is usually a sign of excitement or friendliness. A slow, stiff wag could show uncertainty or even irritation. Your dog’s tail is a great way to understand his or her frame of mind.

Why do dogs eat grass?

This is something every dog owner has probably found themselves wondering at some point in time… “Why do dogs eat grass?”

Typically, dogs may instinctively eat grass as a digestive aid, due to a nutritional deficiency or for behavioural and environmental reasons. Please see our blog on the topic for more information. PUT A LINK: why do dogs eat grass?

Why do dogs bark?

Dogs bark for many reasons; it’s one of the most fundamental canine behaviours. Dogs bark to:

  • Alert or warn
  • Get attention
  • Express excitement
  • Signal fear or anxiety
  • To deter a perceived threat

With barking, tone, pitch, and context are everything. A high-pitched series of barks whilst playing can be a sign of excitement. But a low growl is usually a sign that your dog is concerned.

The Last Woof

Grass eating, poo rolling, tail wagging and barking are all natural and seldom a cause for concern.  They are a part of your dog’s communication toolkit and indicators for us to better understand their needs.
